Hello tropical fun & sun calypso
music lovers. I'm Calypso Bertrand and these are my two Belizean and Tequila oriented CDs in which many of the songs
are of the calypso style. I have been a fan of calypso music since I was a kid growing up in the U.S. and listening
to Harry Belafonte singing calypso on the radio. When I lived in Belize on the small island of Caye Caulker I began
writing songs about my Belizean experiences. Thus came songs like "But Today I'm Drinking Coconut Rum". Belafonte's
"Kingston Town" was always one of my favorite calypso tunes so when I wrote my coconut rum song (about a young man who
had to leave his sweetheart in order to find work) I was thinking very much about Belafonte's poignant lyrics.
My favorite line in "Kingston Town" is: "But I'm sad to say, I'm on my way... won't be back for many a day...
my heart is upside down my head is spining around, I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town." So in my coconut
rum song I have a line which goes: "He said he really hated to leave her, but she lives way down in Dangriga...
she's so pretty, and oh so young... someday I'll make her my only one."
Another one of my favorite Belafonte songs is: "The
Banana Boat Song" also known simply as: "Day-O". I consider this to be Belafonte's signature song.
This song always made me feel the hardships of what having to work long hard hours in order to earn a meager living would
be like. Example: "Work all night on a drink a' rum... daylight come and me wan' go home.
Stack banana till the mornin' come... daylight come and me wan' go home." This song ultimately inspired me to write
a song about what it would have been like had this "banana man" met up with the "son of a son" (Jimmy Buffet).
Thus came my fun caplyso melody: "Nana Mon Rum" with lines like: "Oh the Son of a Son, he came down to the
islands, writing his songs while he was on the run... and the Nana Mon said if you want to have a good time, drink a
little bit of my Nana Mon Rum." These songs, and many more caplyso style songs are included on my CDs displayed
below. If you enjoy a bit of calypso mixed with some fun tropical rockin' then be sure to order them for your next island
